Job Shadow Report
For my first job shadow, I visited Goddard Eisenhower High School with Athletic Director, Eric Armstrong. While I was there, we discussed how he got into the profession and what ways to go about getting in that field. He also gave me a tour of their athletic facilities. He told me that he got his degree as a biology teacher and he taught that for several years until he received his masters degree in secondary administration. When he finished his masters degree he became an Assistant Principal and Athletic director. He suggested that if I wanted to become a High School Athletic Director, the best way to do it would be to get a teaching degree and just move up from there. If I wanted to become an Athletic Director at the collegiate level, it would be easier to get a Sports Management degree, which is what I plan on doing. I learned that if you are the athletic director at a large high school you have the responsibility to schedule every sporting event that your school offers. Whereas, on the collegiate level you are assigned one specific sport to schedule and you don’t have to worry about every sport. I would much rather work on the collegiate level, but a High School Athletic Director is definitely an option I would be fine with doing. |
Job Shadow Report
For my second job shadow, I went to Tulsa, Oklahoma and shadowed Bryant Tyler. Bryant is the Assistant Athletic Director for Ticket Operations and Revenue Generation for Tulsa University. As soon as I got there we went directly into a meeting with six other people that are the heads of their operation. The meeting was called because there was a conflict over the Tulsa softball game the upcoming weekend. They ended up resolving the conflict and both arguing sides came to an agreement on the conflict. This was by far the most exciting thing I did on this job shadow. After that meeting, Bryant took me around to other operation heads that could talk to me about how they got into the field of work and what routes they took. The last part of the tour was the sports facilities. He took me through all the suite levels in the football stadium and onto the field. He also took me in the basketball arena and through all the new locker rooms. Bryant went to WSU and got his degree in Sports Management which is also what I plan on doing. Bryant told me that there are so many different fields in a sports management degree, and that I just need to explore them all and find the one I like best. He also told me to try to get involved with events as much as possible. One thing that I learned from this exciting experience is that I would like to do this for my profession. |
