The pipes in the old building froze and busted over winter break. It flooded the preschool room and they had to completely gut the room. We had to help them move the stuff that wasn't ruined to the Presbyterian Church because that is where they were going to have class while they finished the preschool room.
I learned how much our preschool room had in it and how many things were destroyed by the flood. I enjoyed just being able to help our school in a time of tragedy, but I did not enjoy how cold it was outside and having to take very heavy things across the street to the church. It made me think about how much our community supports our school, by the Presbyterian Church allowing our preschool to use their facility. |
Before the Chisholm Trail Fest, the city asked us seniors to help them clean up the streets of Caldwell and some buildings. We met on Main Street and we all split up and had to do various things. I got to help Kathy Risley set some things up in the museum. Next, I helped rake up leaves at the gazebo and lay new mulch down. Lastly, I had to sweep off the sidewalks on both sides of the street.
I learned about how much effort it takes to make our town look presentable and how much our community takes pride in our town. I enjoyed helping in the museum the most because it was very interesting looking at some of the stuff in there. I didn't like sweeping the sidewalks very much because it felt like a waste of time. I will always look at Caldwell different after doing this and be more thankful for the adults that put on events like this. |

Wellness Night
For our third group activity we decided to put on a wellness night for the elementary kids. We had four activities set up around the school. One in the little gym, two in the big gym, and one in the weightroom. In the little gym we had dodgeball. In the big gym we had a large rainbow parachute and a hula hoop game. In the weightroom we had Just Dance playing. The kids were split up into four groups and they got 15 minutes at each station. I learned about how much energy it takes to keep kids under control and that to get them to listen you have to be very stern with them. I mainly just enjoyed being able to spend time with kids and getting in on a few dodgeball games. It definitely showed me that I do not want to be a teacher when I grow up. |
Gun Show
Mr. Greenlee told all of us that Gene Garcia needed help with the Gun Show. So I signed up for 5 hours of work. What he needed help with was protecting the exits so no one could steal anything. For some reason we had more people working than needed, so I had to be Gene’s personal assistant. I would pretty much do anything he asked me to do. Sometimes I would watch over his table of guns and ammo or sometimes I would have to deliver prizes to people who won them in the drawings they had. I learned about guns and how these gun shows worked because I had never been to one or understood how they worked. I enjoyed it all for the most part, there was nothing that I didn’t enjoy about it. This taught me how to be responsible and have conversations with people who are way older than I am. |

Jalen Risley told me about this activity. I contacted Casie Risley at the City Hall to officialize the arrangements.
The city wide cleanup is something the city of Caldwell does to help people get rid of stuff they just have sitting in their house or on their lawn. So the city has 4 huge Waste Connections trash bins set up and people can haul their junk in trucks or on trailers, and we unload their stuff and launch it in the bins. At the end of the day I got in the truck with another city worker and we drove around because some people would just sit their stuff on curbs and we would have to get it off the curb and haul it back to the dumps. It was a good experience overall, I learned how to interact with people. I also learned to wear gloves because some of the things that were brought you have no idea where it has been. I enjoyed the part of throwing things and breaking them in the trash bins, but I did not enjoy the fact that it was freezing outside. This impacted my life by me realizing that I never want to be a trashman. |
I contacted Mr. Blosser because I knew he was in charge of the recreation baseball fields for the summer. We made the arrangements for the week he would be gone so Jalen and I had to take care of them by ourselves.
Jalen and I were both doing this activity for our individual hours, so we helped each other out. Mr. Blosser had to leave for a week to coach the 8 man all star game, so that whole week Jalen and I were in charge of the fields. We had to drag the fields twice to get them smooth. We had to chalk the baselines as well as the batter boxes and if it was softball we had to chalk the circle for the pitcher. Depending on what age group was playing we’d have to move the rubber mound closer or farther away from the plate. This was by far the hardest individual hours I did. We were on our own for a whole week and we were counted on to take care of these fields alone and if not then their would of been no games played. I learned plenty of things I had no idea how to do. I enjoyed driving the gator and dragging the field, but I did not enjoy trying to pick up the mound and carrying it off the field. This is something I have always enjoyed doing because my Dad used to do it, and it has always been something I have thought about doing with my life but on a higher level. |
